The Customised Suzuki Jimny, which boasts tough looks

This year, many Suzuki Jimny/Jimny Sierra models were on display at Osaka Auto Messe 2024 (OAM). Among these, one custom car that caught AMW’s attention was a pick-up truck version of the current Jimny. Its name is the ‘ESTIRO Green Chopper’. Even the naming of the car is intriguing.

As active, wild-inspired customization became fashionable, the mainstream was turned towards off-roaders. And in recent years, people have turned to pick-up trucks for tougher, wilder looks.

The current Suzuki JB64W Jimny, produced by the Osaka-based ESTIRO customization shop, is a vehicle that incorporates elements of such pick-up trucks. It is therefore registered as a two-seater model with a seating capacity of two. An application for structural modification was submitted and the vehicle was manufactured as an officially approved vehicle.

The pick-up truck that ESTIRO built based on the Jimny this time has a short cargo bed to be called an official pick-up truck due to its dimensions. There is a name for this type of vehicle, which is not familiar to many, but it is called a ‘SUT’.

The SUV we often hear about stands for Space Utility Vehicle, a convenient vehicle that is highly mobile and can be used as an all-round model for a variety of purposes, including work and shopping. In contrast, SUT stands for Space Utility Truck, a style-oriented model that specialises in fun and fashion compared to conventional SUVs. As they do not have as large a cargo bed as pick-up trucks, they are less convenient, but they are cool in style and have been attracting attention in recent years because of their high street appeal.

Models that represent this SUT include the Chevrolet Avalanche, the Cadillac Escalade EXT, and the Star Trooper, a customized Mercedes-AMG G63 by Mansory.

ESTIRO focused on those stylish and cool SUTs and presented a special one with an original body kit at the event. Come to think of it, there have been pick-up truck versions in past Jimny history: the second-generation SJ40 Jimny, which was introduced in 1980, had a pick-up truck model. Therefore, it is no surprise that the current Jimny has a pick-up model.
