The R34 GT-R is full of highlights that have been customized over the past 10 years
The WEKFEST JAPAN event, which originated in the U.S., is a high-level custom car show in which only cars that have passed strict screening are allowed to participate. 2024 found at the venue was a Nissan R34 ” It was a fully customized Nissan R34 “Skyline GT-R,” which was allowed to enter the show this year, and had been thoroughly modified inside and out, including the addition of scissors doors. We would like to introduce a machine that is filled with the owner’s passion.
The R34 GT-R, which became eligible for entry this year
The eligibility for participation in WEKFEST JAPAN is “only for vehicles sold in North America (25-year rule applies),” and the Nissan R34 “Skyline GT-R,” which debuted in 1999 and is eligible for entry from this year, 2024, was entered by “Tom Tom” purchased his 2000 R34 GT-R 12 years ago in almost stock condition, and over the past 10 years, he has been gradually customizing it to its current appearance.
When he first bought the car, he did all the work himself, but when he started modifying the engine and other parts, he asked a specialty store to do the work for him. The engine is an RB28 spec, with a Trust turbine, strengthened injectors, and a LINK control system to achieve 800 hp. In addition to the engine, the exterior of the car also has many highlights.
“The rear fenders are dry carbon ones that were used on the real GT500 Pennzoil, and I bought them from an online auction. I cut the original yellow color by myself, but I dared to leave a part of it. I cut up only the arches of the normal rear fenders did all the chipping by myself, and only asked them to do the smoothing and coloring. Although I painted the fenders, I left some of the dry carbon looks.
Many one-off exterior parts
Not only the rear fenders but also the front fenders were made from one-off carbon fiber and Nismo R35 ducts were transplanted. The bumpers were modified from Z-tune bumpers and fitted with aero parts such as devil lips, and the doors were also converted to scissors doors with the height adjusted by replacing the damper with a new one, focusing on the width to be raised. According to the owner, the exterior parts were selected and fabricated with the flow of the body line in mind.
“I’m making mirrors on the front fenders, and I’m thinking of fender mirrors or a little bit of Zagato (Stelvio). I made a cutout on the fender to match the scissors door, and I also made the inner part of the fender so that the inside is not visible. This is not aero, but I transplanted a generic sunroof and embedded it in the roof.
We want to create a GT-R that surpasses the GT-R
In addition to the aero parts, Tom’s R34 GT-R has been modified in many other details such as the interior with many carbon fiber parts, SSR wheels, brakes, and the suspension with an air suspension. What is the reason why so much attention has been paid to every detail?
“It’s hard to describe, but I think the main reason is that I want to create a GT-R that surpasses the GT-R.”
