Original painted Fairlady 2000

The Datsun “Fairlady” is the model from which the Nissan “Fairlady Z” originated. Among the many classic cars gathered in Okutama, we found a “Fairlady 2000”. We asked the owner how he acquired this car, which was in superb condition with original paint and original interior.

A gem of a FAIRLADY, acquired after years of negotiations

Old cars gather at Okutama Lake in Tokyo early in the morning on the third Sunday of every month. We focus on one of the cars we came across in a parking lot in Okutama. This time, we will introduce a Datsun “Fairlady 2000” with an old license plate number.

A wide range of classic cars were gathered here.

There were several Datsun Fairlady cars parked in the Okutama parking lot early in the morning, where a wide range of classic cars were gathered, but this one with a hard top caught our attention. We interviewed the owner, Mr. Y.

“I knew this car from when the previous owner owned it, and I was driving another Fairlady 2000 at the time, but it took me 33 years of persuading him to finally sell it to me about 5 years ago now. It was originally a convertible with a top, but now it has a hard top that was installed in my previous car.”

The final evolution of the Fairlady with a 2L twin-cab engine

The Datsun Fairlady was the name first used for the first generation “Datsun Sport” with a 1200 cc engine, which appeared in 1960, and was carried over to the second generation, increasing displacement to 1500 cc and 1600 cc, and finally, in 1967 the Datsun Fairlady was completed. Mr. Y is driving a 1969 FAIRLADY 2000, the final evolution of the Datsun FAIRLADY 2000. The serial number indicates that it was manufactured in November 1968, which is the same year that Mr. Y was born. In other words, they are the same age.

Just in 1968, a hardtop model was introduced, but this car was originally covered, and the hardtop was installed on another vehicle that had been previously driven. Therefore, the top is folded and stored under the hardtop, and they have a choice between the two.

The suspension is a stock option from that era, and the ride height has been lowered slightly. Racing sway bars and KONI shocks were also installed. The wheels are Watanabe 4-spoke wheels, which he had before owning this car.

By the way, the 2L U20 engine is said to be in great shape, and the SOLEX twin carburetors installed have the air cleaner removed and are funneled, but have a plaque indicating that they are genuine MIKUNI SOLEX carbs. It is also equipped with a very rare iron-plated manifold, allowing for a sporty drive with the atmosphere of the time.
