A new world of motorsport based on Kei-car
The Copen is Daihatsu’s flagship model. Even though 9 years have passed since the launch of the second generation (June 2014), it remains very popular as a valuable two-seater open car for Kei-cars. Daihatsu unveiled the Copen Club Sport at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2023, a concept car full of motorsport flavor based on the Copen Cero.
Kei-car Copen in café racer style
The racing stripes running across the body, reminiscent of old café racers, extend through the center console and into the cockpit. The styling is harmonious. The body color is a military-inspired grey, reminiscent of a fighter plane.
The parts used are from Daihatsu’s D-SPORT customize division. The styling is like a racing car but with a cute look thanks to the Cero’s charming front face. Many people enjoy driving Kei-cars on the sports track, and this car is a good sample for those who enjoy racing in their holidays.
A Kei-car-based motorhome with 2.6meter cargo space
Let us introduce another vehicle from the Daihatsu booth. The concept of the Hijet Truck Jumbo Extend is an easy-to-use motorhome based on a Kei car. It was designed to partner with the Copen Club Sport, with track driving in mind.
As the name suggests, the Extend has a sliding box (cargo area) from the Hijet Truck Jumbo to increase the cargo length to a maximum of 2.6m. This is almost the same length as the Toyota Hiace. Unfortunately, there are no plans to market it as a concept now, but when we spoke to Mr. Satodate, who is responsible for the vehicle’s coloring, he had a dreamy story to tell.
“The concept is to see what Daihatsu can offer when people enjoy Sunday racing with Copen. We think it would be practical to have a car that could slide the cargo area and extend the interior by a single adult.”
Expectations are high for overnight users
The base vehicle is a Hijet Truck Jumbo (MT). It can be slid into the cargo area by a single adult. There is plenty of space not only as a motorhome but also as a resting place for the driver.
Overnight camping and solo camping have become increasingly popular in recent years. There are many possible uses. This is a concept car from one manufacturer, but if it can pass safety requirements, it is a technology to look forward to.
