The famous car in the 86&BRZ world has undergone a major renewal
About 200 GR86 & 86 & BRZ cars gathered at Gunma Sonic held at G-Messe Gunma on July 6, 2024. We picked up one car of interest from among them. Let us introduce the evolution of Mr. Masayan’s Toyota “86,” which is also famous at the event.
This is the result of the steady customization process
We spotted one of the most conspicuous cars at the event. We were told that it was already a very famous car in the 86&BRZ community. There was just too much information to understand, so we decided to talk to the owner, Mr. Masayan, about the car at length.
“I bought the car new in 2015 and have been working on customizing it ever since. I installed Rocket Bunny’s Ver.1 wide-body kit right after the car was delivered. After that, I don’t like to keep the same style for a long period, so I try to change the image of the car every year as much as possible. This year, I have done quite a few things, so it is very different from last year.”
The huge vertical tail wing is a tribute to the C-cars of yesteryear
The rocket bunny aero-clad body added a huge canard to the front this year. The canards extend from the front bumper area to the top of the fenders. Another major change was made around the rear wing. The existing wing was retained, but an additional vertical tail fin was added.
“I used various race cars, including F1 cars, as references. This has been a theme for the past few years. In particular, I studied the shape of the front canard and vertical tail fin by looking at C-cars. I always pay attention to other details of race cars.”
The body color is a bright color reminiscent of the old Leighton Green, and the large logos in various places give it a race car look.
The suspension of a racing car was reproduced with forged wheels on order
The suspension is a special KW Suspension damper, which was set up by a professional. After installing these, the car’s movement suddenly improved. The wheels were also a highlight. The usual comment was, “The design of the front and rear wheels is different.
“Is this a tribute to the Porsche 962C or the Mazda 787? is the correct answer! The front wheels were designed to resemble the fins used on the front wheels of C-cars and other vehicles to dissipate the heat from the brakes, and WORK SION, which can manufacture forged wheels to full order, has reproduced the style with fins on the front and the simple six spokes used on actual race cars on the rear. The front wheels are a fin-fitted style, while the rear wheels are a simple 6-spoke set that was used on actual race cars.”
The engine was bored up to 2.1 liters at the same time as the overhaul, and a HKS turbo kit was installed. This was set up with the POWER PLUS ECU. The result is a vehicle that looks as good as it drives.
