RX-7 converted into a convertible 2-seater!

Mr. Oshida, the representative of Stardust Factory, is a person who works hard to raise the awareness of customization to a higher level. He built a Mazda FD3S “RX-7” to spider specifications. He built the full RX-7 Spyder version, saying, “If I built it, I wanted to drive it myself, but even more than that, all the car enthusiasts would pay attention to it!” What are the surprising specifications of this car?

The name of the car is the “FD3S RX-7 Spyder”

They are lighthearted, but earnest in their creation, which is the style of Mr. Oshida of the Stardust Factory. The quality of the open-top Mazda FD3S “RX-7” presented here is superb, and the photos fully convey the quality of the workmanship.

At the mention of open-top FD3S models, we recall the “GReddy8” presented by RE Amemiya at the 1999 Tokyo Auto Salon. Mr. Oshida was deeply involved in the production of this car. When he saw the completed GReddy8, he fell in love with its cool styling and thought, “I want to build one someday” as his car. So, he decided to make an open-top model of his beloved car, a Model 3 FD3S, and spent a year and a half in between his regular work to complete the project.

The key point of the body modification was to remove the rear hatch and utilize the factory side windows and door knobs, etc. The A-pillar was left in place, and the B-pillar was cut leaving a raised section to fit the outer handle where the keyhole is attached, so the factory power windows and centralized door lock work properly. The centralized door locks also function properly. The roof is a soft-top canvas style, but in consideration of the problem of rainwater leaking in through the gaps between the front and side windows, rain gutters have been constructed to stop rainwater from entering the roof. In addition, the rooftop has special rails on the front, rear, left, and right sides to provide strength to hold it firmly in place.

On the other hand, the vast trunk space created by the removal of the rear hatch has a special hood that matches the body shape and is designed to securely mount the rear wing, just like a sports car. It is also important to note that the beautiful form of the FD3S is maintained even when the hood is in place.

Beautiful form inherited from RE Amemiya race machines

The exterior of this FD3S has an attractive finish, but the body has been widened with RE Amemiya’s GT-AD Kit III. This kit is famous among FD3S owners for its aggressive and beautiful form, just like the RE Amemiya race machines that used to compete in the GT Championship.

The suspension is a street-use coilover kit, and 17-inch wheels were chosen to balance the open body. The wheels are Enkei NT03RR (F: 8.0J/R: 9.0J) and Advance Sports tires (F: 235/45R17/R: 255/40R17).

Can be ordered with strength based on automobile manufacturer standards

As for the interior, only two full bucket seats were set up as in the open-sport Spyder, and the comfort equipment was left in stock. The only addition is satellite speakers mounted near the headrests, similar to the FC3S Savanna RX-7 Cabriolet of the past. This allows the driver to enjoy open-air driving while listening to their favorite music.

Mr. Oshida of Stardust Factory is a specialist in open-top models and has built cars for major companies in the past. He has built convertible models for various types of cars, including the well-known Type 10 “Soarer,” the Z31 “Fairlady Z,” and the “Prelude. Therefore, this car is not just a wild model with the roof ripped off, but a practical convertible model that maintains the strength of an automobile manufacturer’s standard. If there is a real desire for a car like this, it is possible to produce it, so those who are interested are encouraged to inquire about it.
