The unique “NX Coupe” was created with free ideas
The Nissan NX Coupe, launched in January 1990, is one of the most unique models created with a free spirit. The Nissan NX Coupe fascinated people with its style that was ahead of its time, including equipment that allowed an umbrella to be stored in the open door, and a T-bar roof specification that was similar to the Fairlady Z. The Nissan NX Coupe was the first car to be sold in Japan. We interviewed the owner of the NX Coupe, Mr. “Nitsuma”.
Attracted by the originality of the exterior
Mr. “Nitsuma” participated in the “15th Jibiken Meeting” held on April 20, 2024, driving a 1990 Nissan NX Coupe. At the time of purchase, he was only aware of the NX Coupe, but at a nearby car store, he fell in love with its cute form at first sight and decided to buy it.
He also owns a Nissan Rasheen, which he still drives today, and he decided to add the NX Coupe to his existing fleet. Why would a man in his 20s be attracted to a car of that age?
“When I became a working adult, I was browsing a used car information site and saw a car I used to drive around town when I was in elementary school, and it brought back memories. I am attracted to cars of this age because of the abundance of manual transmissions and the originality of their exteriors.”
Genuine parts are often hard to find
He also likes the shape of the recessed headlights and the “old man’s three-tiered stomach”-like the rear end. When he rides in the car, strangers sometimes ask him, “What country is this car from? When he drives it, he is often asked by strangers, “What country is this car from? The owner Mr. “Nitsuma” himself has never seen anyone else driving an NX coupe, and because it is such a rare car, he has had a hard time finding genuine parts.
He said, “I sometimes find engine and suspension parts because it is a Sunny type car, but exterior parts are rare, so I am afraid of bumping into it. For the interior, I replaced the steering wheel switch with a new one, and for the wiper parts, I got the last one left at Nissan.”
“It came with an umbrella that can be put in the space where the door opens, which is equipped to hold an umbrella. This is a popular item and costs about 50,000 yen at online auctions, so the fact that it came with this umbrella was one of the deciding factors in my purchase. Other than the genuine parts, I equipped the audio system with Bluetooth, as well as a navigation system.”
In addition, the rotten mid-pipe of the muffler, plug cord, and condenser were replaced, and the wheels, which used to be external, were purchased genuine from an internet auction! He has also installed a genuine Nissan “Skyline” R32 series fog lamp, which has the same model number, so that the car can be used daily. Currently, he is having a hard time finding a genuine door visor, and it will take some time before he can install it.
